There is no doubt that many Westerners traveling to Nepal are looking to take from Buddhism and Hinduism what our own culture has tried to exclude from its discourse. They travel abroad to discover in distant lands something that they perceive to have become unrecognizable in the West, that is, the encroachment of unbridled materialism and modernity into traditional space. And often, if they cannot find it in Nepal they make it themselves, or better yet, local people seeing a service to provide make it for them.
